Tips for Buying Water Filters

Things to consider before you purchase

Before you start looking for a water filter or purification system:

  1. Have your water tested. The test will reveal which contaminants are present in your water, and this in turn will help you decide which filter is right for you. You may be surprised.

  2. Decide which method (or combination of methods) of filtration is best once you know what’s in your water. Be sure to read about methods of filtration as well as types of water filters available.

  1. Set a budget. You know how much money you want to spend, of course, but keep in mind that scrimping on decontamination can be poorly advised. Remember, too, that if you buy a filter that does not do what you need you will end up throwing it out.

  2. Ask yourself, what kind of unit fits with our home. Do you want a large unit to cover your whole home? Do you want to filter water only at the tap? Should you monitor your water closely? You might also consider the look of the product. This may seem minor, but the look of your water filter will affect your satisfaction with the product. A filter with the right color, shape and style might lead to you using it regularly.

While you shop for a water filter:

  1. Understand the efficiency of each kind of filtration method and keep in mind how this matches up with your needs. Consult with buyer reviews and pepper the vendor or salesperson with questions.

  2. Consider the length and service of warranties.

  3. Understand the maintenance requirements of each kind of filter or system. This will vary widely depending on the type of unit you purchase. Maintenance is critical to the proper functioning of some filter systems, for example carbon filters. Some systems will be low maintenance; you’ll pay more for this and it will give you more freedom.

  4. Consider delivery. If you damage anything on the trip to your home, this could reduce the efficiency of the unit or even damage it permanently.

  5. Ask about installation requirements. The installation process can add a significant amount to the overall price of a product, and you may end up spending a lot more than you originally thought.
