What’s in Your Water?

A guide to contaminants

When drinking tap water it’s easy to assume that the water you’re drinking is clean, clear and healthy (after all, it appears clear), but many individuals do not know what exactly is in their water or how harmful these particles can be. A number of contaminants may be present in your water, and these can be very detrimental to your health. The following is a guide illustrating some of the dangerous contaminants in your water, where they come from and how they can affect the health of many individuals. Water filters in the USA are rated by the EPA, to rid your water of these contaminants.

Microorganisms
Cryptosporidium – Cryptosporidium is a contaminant which may be present in water. Its source is human and fecal animal waste and it can cause gastrointestinal illness, with symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting and cramps.

Giardia Lamblia – Giardia lamblia comes from the same source as cryptosporidium and produces the same effects.

Disinfection Byproducts
Bromate – Bromate is a byproduct of drinking water disinfection. When consumed by human beings it can increase the risk of cancer.

Chlorite – Chlorite is also a byproduct of drinking water disinfection. When consumed by human beings, this contaminant can cause anemia in infants and young children. It also has detrimental effects on the human nervous system.

Disinfectants
Chloramines and Chlorine – Chloramines are a water additive used to control microbes. When consumed, this contaminant may cause irritation to the eyes and nose. It may also cause stomach discomfort and anemia.

Antimony - Antimony is a discharge from petroleum refineries, fire retardants, ceramics, electronics and solder. When consumed by human beings, this contaminant can cause an increase in blood cholesterol and a decrease in blood sugar.

Organic Chemicals
Acrylamide – Acrylamide is a chemical coagulant added to water in sewage/wastewater treatment to aid in the cleaning process. When consumed, this chemical can cause blood problems as well as problems with the nervous system. It can also increase the risk of cancer.

Alachlor – Alachlor is runoff from herbicide used on row crops. When consumed by humans, this contaminant can cause eye, liver, kidney or spleen problems. It is also known to cause anemia and can increase the risk of cancer.

Atrazine – This contaminant is also a runoff from herbicide used on row crops. When consumed, it can cause problems with the cardiovascular system and can also cause potential reproductive problems.

These are just a few of the many chemicals and other contaminants that can be found in your drinking water; these are especially dangerous for those with well water. EPA guidelines directly govern the removal of these through the use of certified water filters and water purification systems. You can learn more about these and other contaminants here.
