Refrigerators equipped with water systems will almost always have a built in water filtration system to ensure water is healthy for consumption. Most new refrigerators come with a built-in water filter. These will also filter the water for your ice maker.
The obvious advantage of a refrigerator water filter
- You get cold filtered water.
Some cons to a refrigerator filter
- You only get cold filtered water. If you require more versatility, you’ll need another water filtering system.
- You only have one source of filtered water.
- The filters for these are not as robust as those you would find for other systems such as an under the sink filtration system.
Replacing your refrigerator water filter
There are a few very different methods that water filters work with your refrigerator. None of these is significantly more expensive than any other method.
Most filters are like the Clean 'n Clear Replacement Filter suitable for Amana fridges. The filter will be found in the back of the fridge over the top shelf. You simply unscrew the old filter and replace it with a new one.
Inline filters such as Abundant Earth’s Refrigerator/Ice-Maker Water Filter filters water before it reaches the fridge. To replace these, you will need to shut off your water supply first. Cut the pipe leading to the refrigerator and insert the filter’s inlet and outlet ends in the proper place. This style is relatively unique and not nearly as popular, as they are a little more difficult to replace.
Some older models of GE refrigerators (those using a “Smart Water” filtration system) will require the addition of a P/N Adapter with your water filter. There are also add-on water filter kits adaptable for some older model refrigerators that did not include a filter.
Before you purchase
You’ll need the model number and the fridge make before you take your filter in for replacement. Don’t assume that you can simply take your old filter to an appliance dealer. The older style of filter may have been replaced by a more versatile model.
