Home Water Filtration

Check out different options for whole home water filtering

There are a number of ways to have the water in your home filtered. You can filter it at th endpoint but its best to begin at the beginning.

Whole home water filtering is of course the most robust form of water filtering you can purchase. Also called in-line water filtering (and whole house water filtering) this attaches to your home’s plumbing system at some point before water is distributed throughout your home. It may surprise some people that these units are not much more expensive than portable or under the sink water filtration. They are expensive, on the whole, as you have to hire a plumber to install them.

A whole home water system has the obvious advantage of covering all water outlets in your home. However, there is a hidden disadvantage to this: water may in fact be filtered too early. It still has to run throughout your plumbing system. It can be re-contaminated with copper (worse yet, lead) fragments and fragments from system buildup. This system buildup can include calcium as well as more potentially harmful pollutants like bacteria and mold. If you have old plumbing in your house, these issues could be serious.

On the flipside of this, a whole home water filtering system will stop or slow this buildup.
This type of system is also very good at removing chlorine as well as VOCs before they enter your home. These can contaminate the air of your home. Even if you think they are not that important to filter out of everyday uses such as toilet water or washing machine water, these water outlets can be problematic. Especially for some people with allergies, any form of air pollution within the home can have adverse effects.

Used in conjunction with an end-point water filter (such as a pitcher-type filter) this can make for failsafe water filtration. It’s prevention at the source.
